Tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable death in Canada. One of every two smokers will die prematurely from a tobacco-related illness. Tobacco use can cause persistent bad breath, discoloration of teeth, plaque build-up, tooth decay, tooth loss, periodontal disease and oral cancer. Using the CARE Program allows dental professionals to further promote oral health through smoking cessation.

COURSE OUTLINE:
  • Impact of smoking on overall health and wellness
  • Oral health and smoking (including oral cancer, periodontal disease, mouth sores, etc.)
  • Chewing tobacco
  • E-cigarettes and their safety and/or effectiveness in quitting smoking
  • An orientation to the CARE Program (what it is, how it is used, its success, Smokers' Helpline services)
  • The role of dental professionals in preventing and eliminating tobacco use
  • How to approach a client when providing information on smoking and cessation
