Independent Practice

Registered dental hygienists in our province are able to work independently in a variety of settings such as dental hygiene clinics, hospitals, long term care facilities, and can offer mobile services as well. Our regulatory bodies have established policies and protocols that govern our profession and protect the public regardless of our practice setting. To learn more about the role of NL College of Dental Hygienists and the NL Council of Health Professionals, please visit the FAQ section on our website.

The Canadian Dental Hygienists Association (CDHA) offers support in practice management, billing and continuing education surrounding independent practice... here's our quick start guide. You can also check out a list of frequently asked questions about independent practice on the CDHA website.

The Independent Practice Network (IPN)

Thinking about practicing independently? The IPN is where you'll want to start! Once you've enhanced your CDHA membership with this add on (there's a $75 yearly fee), you'll have access to a national network of independent dental hygienists. You'll also be able to ask questions to the IPN community and buy/sell equipment.

Your unique identification number (UIN)

In order to bill dental insurances for dental hygiene services, you'll need to obtain a UIN from the CDHA. It's important to note that even if there are multiple RDHs practicing together, each practitioner must bill under their own number. Your UIN is included with your independent practice network membership.

IRDHs in our province can bill MCP for the children's dental program! To register and for more information, click here.

Learning + planning for independent practice

The CDHA offers an online workshop series that will help you: establish your vision, prepare a business plan, develop marketing/communication plans and embrace your inner manager. The courses are included with your $75 membership, or cost $199 a course (4 courses total) with a regular CDHA membership.
